Cancer Fighting Powerhouse: Tomatoes!

Tomatoes can help you win the war on cancer!  These stealthy ninjas contain lycopene, an antioxidant and pigment that is part of the carotenoid family.  In studies, lycopene has been shown to help prevent prostate, lung and stomach cancers.  There is also some evidence that it may help reduce cancers of the pancreas, colon and rectum, esophagus, oral cavity, breast and cervix.  Not only that, but it may help reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease by lowering blood pressure and LDL (bad) cholesterol. 

No question, tomatoes are an easy weapon to add to your anti-cancer arsenal.  But, it should be noted that cooked tomatoes (not raw) offer the best source of lycopene.  So, to take advantage of all the health benefits lycopene has to offer, try adding tomato juice, marinara sauce or tomato paste to your diet regularly.  Just make sure to choose options which are lower in sugar, and that are preferably made with organic tomatoes.
